There are some brunch places that will have a line out the door, no matter what time of year, what time of day, which day of the week, or whatever the weather is.
Some of those places live up to the hype….and many do not. I’m still not quite sure where Jane falls on that spectrum.
Straddling the border between Greenwich Village and Soho, Jane Restaurant is most popular at brunch on weekends. You will always spot a crowd out front, so reservations are almost necessary.
I say almost because a friend and I walked in recently on a beautiful Sunday morning about 15 minutes before noon and didn’t have a problem…getting the very last table available in a very spacious dining room that was already packed. (I truly used up my brunch karma that day.)
The menu itself is very basic. All the brunch items you’d expect from pancakes and french toast to omelettes and scrambles. The server did give us one warning when we were about to order: no French fries possible because something was wrong with the fryer. Sad!
However, we were still able to order home fries, and if there is one thing I can take away and recommend whole-heartedly about Jane are these. They were, quite simply, the very best home fries I’ve ever had. They were warm, tender (but not soggy) and so impeccably seasoned. I’d go back and get two orders of that (for myself) and call it a day.
Otherwise, we got the French toast (sure) and the kale and eggs with quinoa (also sure). They were fine. They were things to eat for brunch. I’m just glad we didn’t have to wait an hour outside for them because then I’d be writing a completely different review.
