Last Friday I had the opportunity to check out a sneak preview and exclusive fete celebrating (and promoting) an interesting cross-section between wine, photography, art, and Hollywood.
That would be the launch party for Assemblage: A Lenny Kravitz Photo Exhibition, sponsored by Dom Pérignon.
I’m still not sure what “Assemblage” was supposed to mean, other than clearly the Champagne house assembled a bunch of Kravitz’s famous friends and family together for a small party in the Hollywood Hills, with some not-so-subtle product placement in some of the serious (but not too serious) artsy noir photos.
Being press, I arrived a bit on the early side (so right after the doors opened) so I could get a look at all of the photos without too many people to navigate around—as well as to get a glass of Dom without a wait. The latter was never a problem the whole evening as the Dom Pérignon kept flowing all evening.
Even if the party was promotional in every sense of the word, it was still quite a bit of fun for a Friday evening in Chelsea. (Honestly I’m someone who prefers to curl up and stay home on Fridays so I can enjoy all of Saturday better.) But the photos themselves—described in the invite as “behind the scenes,” shot by Lenny himself—were delightful to look at, although I wonder how close all of the subjects are in real life without the free bubbles.
Most of the subjects in the photos—including models, artists, designers, actors, and more Hollywood names—were at the party on Friday, and yes, that is Susan Sarandon with Alexander Wang in the snapshot below. I managed to gather what little courage I had and tell her I loved her dress—it looked so comfortable—and she said it was Zac Posen!
Assemblage is viewing for one week only at the Skylight Modern in Chelsea now.
