If there is one place that might epitomize the title of this site better than most (or even all) place I’ve been in Manhattan, Dirty French would be it.
Champagne? Check. Fries? Check. Available seating at the bar? Check.
Dirty French, located on the ground floor of the Ludlow Hotel in the Lower East Side, is good for just about any rendezvous, whether it is with one person or half a dozen people. If it’s on the latter side, you’re going to want to make a reservation for the dining room (or hope to score plush seating on one of the couches in the Lobby Bar area across the hall).
Otherwise, you can saddle up to the bar, which is what I prefer to do here. You can order from the main menu at the bar, although the Lobby Bar has a bar snacks menu.
My latest trip here even fit the bill for the name of this site in that we weren’t that hungry, just wanted a couple of glasses of wine, and something to snack on—specifically fries.
Drinks are on the pricier end, and a glass of Crémant will start at about $13-14. Yet that is a much more budget-friendly option than the true Champagnes on the list, which will ring up much higher.
There are actually a number of other items on the regular menu, even the apps section, that I want to order on my next visit, including the butternut squash millefeuille.
But the pommes frites will serve you well here, perfectly salted and paired with a glass of bubbles. The fries are a bit on the softer side, but that’s actually how I prefer them. My only complaint is that I wish there were more of them. So if you think you’re going to be hungry (and don’t want to share) get a few orders instead.
