Sweet Jesus is the name of the sweets shop…but it’s also an apt expression when you see the final creations.
Whenever I travel, for work or pleasure, my instinct is to first research the local food scene. I cultivate information from a variety of sources, including Eater, Yelp, The Infatuation, and Instagram, and then compile all of that into a list/map on Foursquare.
The Infatuation’s specific Instagram for Toronto is how I found Sweet Jesus. (And good luck trying to escape that Instagram feed once you click on it.)
Even before I walked in (and after walking around downtown Toronto for about two hours, just taking in the new location), I had trouble deciding what to order. There is just SO MUCH here.
While I truly believe ice cream is an anytime food (in terms of whether, not consumption like vegetables, etc.), the temperature in Toronto that afternoon did help me settle on a hot chocolate concoction rather than an ice cream cone. (It was bright and sunny but a bit chilly—especially in the shade of buildings as the sun was already going down in the late afternoon.)
It was definitely delicious, especially the whipped cream layer with all the sprinkles and shavings on top. Underneath that, it’s really a standard hot chocolate. But taken altogether, it’s very, very sweet—to the point where I developed a headache. I couldn’t even finish the cup. If I got something similar again in the future, it would be good to share with someone.
