While it’s definitely not a secret (the bar area is proof enough for that), The Polo Bar might be one of the best spots in Midtown that a lot of people overlook.
For some local financiers and dealmakers, it might be a place to see and be seen. For the rest of us, it’s really a lively, slightly more upscale place with great food (some of the best fries and truly one of the best veggie burgers in NYC)—albeit at a steep price point, but the ambiance and stellar service is worth it once in a while. (Seriously, the staff here are always so nice.)
All that said, it’s definitely a place where you want to make reservations, especially if you have a group. But it’s ideal for either a table for two or a birthday dinner.
The Polo Bar does have a very meat-forward menu, at first glance anyway. But there are a lot of vegetarian options, including a pumpkin tortelli I’m still dying to try. And, of course, there are the fries. Honestly, I devoured two whole “cups” of them in one sitting and I’m not even ashamed of it nor do I regret it. They are THAT GOOD. (Pair that with nearly anything on the wine list, but my personal favorite is the Frank Family Vineyards Sparkling Brut Rosé.)
I already touched a bit on the veggie burger, which again, I can’t recommend enough and I don’t know why it’s not on more of those “Best Veggie Burgers in NYC” lists. (Yes, those exist.) You really need to be hungry to eat it. I’ve been to the Polo Bar for a few different meals now, and while it’s definitely too heavy for lunch, it’s perfect for dinner.
Also, I saw an Avenger at the bar, but I won’t say which one...
