Just across the hallway from Studio is possibly one of the best—and smallest—cocktail bars in Manhattan, named for the OG president: The George Washington Bar.
The portrait of the “Father of Our Country” over the bar might seem like the most obvious giveaway to the name. But really, it’s named for the for the hotel in which it is located: the Freehand Hotel on Lexington Avenue, previously known as the George Washington Hotel.
Frankly, the coat room to the side on the way in might seem bigger, but there’s actually quite enough room at the bar—especially if there are only two or three of you and/or you’re willing to stand. There is some seating around, and probably requires reservations or diving in like a hawk. I happened to be there for an event, so I was lucky as far as securing entry was concerned.
There are some snacks around, and if you’re really hungry, you should head back to Studio across the hall. That said, the cocktails are why you come here. And as someone who likes to judge a cocktail bar based on how well they make a Perfect Manhattan, the GW Bar succeeds with flying colors. George would be proud.
